Wimbledon Round Two

Round Two by Mark Young

The first round of Wimbledon is all but completed and the next round comes thick and fast at the all England club.

The big four in the men’s draw all got through with relative ease. The most impressive being Novak Djokovic, only dropping six games in the way to a three set victory over Chardy. The Serb is slipping under the radar with the hype surrounding Federer, Nadal and Murray and still looks really good value to cause an upset in the next two weeks. He has only lost one game all season but that seems to be getting swept under the carpet by everyone at the moment. He is still priced at 7/2 for an outright win.

Nadal also won in straight sets with his parents in the royal box and most would consider Nadal to have a long run over the next few weeks. The Spaniard and his old foe Federer are back and forth as favourite and second favourite. They look on course to face each other in the final but there is still some challenges ahead.

The only one of these four to drop a set was Andy Murray. Under the roof of Centre Court the Scot dropped the first set to Daniel Gimeno-Traver. It seemed to give him a kick up the backside and he roared back winning the final three sets 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 and looked impressive doing so.

Murray should be motivated enough but he does take a while to get going. Murray to lose the first set against any of his opponents should see some good returns by the end of the tournament. He faces Tobias Kamke of Germany on Wednesday on Court One and is a huge favourite so he value would be in Murray dropping the first set.

There is still no clear favourites in the women’s draw after Serena Williams (7/2) survived a scare in the first round, eventually coming out as a two sets to one victor over Rezai. Sister Venus (7/1) comfortably won on Monday. The only two top seeds that miss out on Round Two are Sam Stosur and Jelena Jankovic.

Maria Sharapova (4/1) is another one who is easily through as she searches for her second Wimbledon title. French Open champion and Australian Open finalist Li Na (8/1) joins her after a relatively easy victory on Tuesday afternoon and she could yet be a big challenger to Sharapova and the Williams sisters.

On this season’s form Li could make another final and could prove a very smart bet, if value and a run for money is what is being looked for.

For a first round that was forecast to be a complete washout, one evening of rain is not a bad run, unless you are one of the punters who backed no rain. Let’s hope the weather stays dry and the tennis stays as brilliant as it always it as SW19 for the rest of the tournament.
